Texas Oncology Participates in International Prostate Cancer Study Culminating in FDA Approval

A new drug used to treat prostate cancer that is resistant to medical or surgical treatments that lower testosterone showed significantly increased survival for patients, according to a large international study published in the May 26 print edition of the New England Journal of Medicine. Thomas Hutson, D.O., Pharm.D., with Texas Oncology–Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, is co-author of the study, which examined abiraterone acetate (Zytiga), in the fight against this type of advanced-stage prostate cancer.

Major Breast Cancer Study Shows Lymph Node Removal Does Not Improve Survival

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that a procedure common in breast cancer treatments does not improve survival outcomes, compared with other standard therapies. The study, a Phase III clinical trial, found that surgical lymph node removal had no impact on breast cancer survival, potentially offering a subset of breast cancer patients a safer, less intrusive option for cancer treatment.

Texas Oncology–Amarillo Blood Cancer Patients Now Have Access to Largest Blood and Marrow Donor Registry in the World

The Amarillo Blood and Marrow Transplant Program (ABMTP) consisting of Texas Oncology–Amarillo Cancer Center, Northwest Texas Hospital, and Coffee Memorial Blood Center, has been designated an official National Marrow Donor Program^® (NMDP) transplant center. The Amarillo program, which is the only program in the Panhandle that offers blood and marrow transplants, is now one of only 132 programs in the nation to receive the National Marrow Donor Program designation, and one of only 218 worldwide.
